Migration Trends
In the period immediately following World War II Osaka, as well as Japan in general was seeing a increase of migration into its largest metropolitan areas of: Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. At its peak in the 1960s migration numbers, for Osaka, were as high as 100,000 new migrants per year. This increase in migration only lasted about 15 years as in the mid 1970s the migration rates started dropping until they reached the negatives(more people leaving than coming into city) and hit a low of almost -200,000 people, in the 1970s. I believe that is due to the high levels of pollution that the city experienced at this time. Furthermore as Osaka began adopting green policies, and creating job opportunities with the discovery of greener technologies, the migration rates rose back up and stabilized in recent time. Japan as a country overall features a large amount of internal migration, in addition to international migration.
