Osaka, formerly known as Naniwa, was the imperial capital of Japan numerous times, and housed the Osaka Castle, which was once a military wonder but now is succeeded by a replica. After multiple power shifts Osaka became a flourishing trade center.
Osaka was officalialy incorportated in 1889 with a starting area of only 5.8 square miles. By 1995 the city' area had expanded to 85.3 squre miles, with a metropolitan area (Osaka-fu) covering 733 square miles and being over 80% urbanized.

Due to the demand of weaponary and equipment for the Japanese in World War 2, Osaka 's production of steel, copper, aluminum, heavy machinery, chemicals and household electrical appliances. . Osaka thrived on heavy industries, imcluding metal and machinery, during and after World Was 2 but was hindered by lack of space and land subsidence/desertification due to the excessive pumping of ground water.
